IYFZZZ,

This is called the sky burial in Tibet. Since it is believe that a person re-incarnates after dying the body serves no real purpose. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. The body is cut in specific places, and left on a mountain top, exposing it to the elements. According to Buddhist teaching, this makes it easier for the soul of the deceased to move on from the uncertain plane between life and death onto the next life. So as barbaric as this might look, there is an actual purpose to this.

also... up in tibet the ground's rather hard, so sky burial is more practical.

I don't want to be embalmed and buried in a box only to become some disgusting coffin liquor. I would much rather be eaten by vultures.

I really do not understand negative feelings towards this. I have to ask, why is this strange, why relations like "wtf" etc. Is it more natural to embalm someone, stick them in a box, and toss them in the ground? This is far better for the environment, the birds get a meal, and do what they do naturally. I would be happy to have this done.

this is awesome, what a great post! I wish I could be memorialized this way. The perfect Buddhist burial: no creatures are harmed (digging kills worms and such), but are in fact benefited by your death (the vultures).

In the US, there are some places where a person can be legally buried simply wrapped in a sheet or blanket, without embalming, and with a simple marker or tree to mark the grave. Is a sky burial legal anywhere in the US?

HE WAS TIED LIKE THAT FOR EASY TRANSPORTATION... NO TORTURING OR MURDER JUST AN EMPTY VESSEL BEING RECYCLED. LESS RESPECT FOR THE DEAD AND MORE FOR THE LIVING, A MANTRA THAT WESTERN PEOPLE COULD USE.

I agree with Matt...
This is interesting, it's a side of a culture that is different then yours and that's no reason for it to be "beneath" anything... you need to be less ignorant and closeminded
