In the usa they bend the ends of the guardrail into the ground, or put a rounded .5m deflector at the end to help prevent such accidents.

Well, I'd say, for whoever was sitting in that seat, it was over REAL quick. Another trick used to prevent this is plastic containers filled with sand to absorb the impact. Very effective if the speeds aren't too high.

@robin yates: yes, a bit. Friend of mine works in such occasions. She doesn't talk very much about her work... but yes, she can handle this.

Well somebody certainly got hurt pretty badly. In Dubai the driver is on the right side, so he wasn't impaled, but reports on the web say he died instantly. This was from back in October of 2007.
